This is a photo of my Granddaddy from when he was in college. I never realized how much my brother looks like him.
Based on all the photos that were at the funeral home as well as the ones we went through at their house, I've composed a list of 4 reasons that you MUST make sure to document your life through photos. I've not always been the best at making sure to take photos myself (crazy I know) but trust me, it's something that you want to make a commitment to do. You will be extremely glad you did down the road.
I can't imagine not having all these photos to remember him by. You may think that you don't need photos when you have your memories, but read on to find out why that's not always true-
1. Photos ALWAYS Trigger Memories You Had Forgotten- How many times have you looked at a photo from the past and said "Oh yeah, I remember when...". It seems like something you had forgotten- a stage in your life, a fun time, or something else that suddenly comes to the forefront of your mind. Often times this triggers other happy memories of the same time that put a smile on your face.
2. Photos Help You Tell Younger Generations About People and Times Gone By- One tradition in my family is everyone going down to the lake and spending time together. Many years ago, my great grandparents, great aunts and uncles, parents, cousins, aunts, and uncles often came together at our family lake house where my great grandparents lived. Looking at these photos, I not only got to see what these times were like, but I also got to see family members who passed away before I was born. Many whom I've heard lots of stories about.
3. Photos Accurately Document Life Events- Many times, you remember a life event that happened (such as Christmas 2002) but you might not remember all the specifics of it (like the presents you gave and received and who all was there). Sometimes memories of an important event get fuzzy or you argue with someone over what actually happened. When you have photos to refer to, the facts become crystal clear.
4. Photos Help You Learn Things You Never Realized- I always thought my brother just looked like himself and no one in particular, until I saw a picture of my Granddaddy when he was younger. The resemblance is uncanny. It's amazing what you can pick up from photos that no one ever thought to tell you.
I hope this post really inspires you to start documenting all aspects of your lives. For my next post, I will discuss which life events are the most important to document...some may never have occurred to you.
What photos do you have that you are so glad you or someone else captured? Are they of a particular memory or event or of a person? Please let me know in the comments below!
All the best,
